Flaking skin is usually associated with those who have dry skin, but the truth is that any skin type can experience dry, flaking skin, especially under certain environmental conditions. The skin on our faces is the thinnest and most delicate on our bodies, and as such is much more liable to become stressed and flaky. And, as if the unsightliness that flaking skin causes wasn’t bad enough, it can easily become itchy and irritated. Fortunately, your flaking skin can be treated and your complexion can improve with just a bit of care.
What Causes Flaking Skin?
There can be a number of causes of flaking skin, and identifying the source of the problem can be the first step in correcting it.
- If you naturally have dry skin, you are already more likely to experience flaking. Dry skin lacks enough natural oil to keep the skin lubricated properly, and as a result, flaking can develop.
- Exposure to the sun is another prime cause of flaking skin. This can affect any skin type, even oily skin, and the longer you expose your skin to the sun, the more likely it is that you will get sunburn and flaking.
- During the winter, we all have to deal not only with drier air outside, but also with the dry, warm air our heating systems deliver. If you feel your lips becoming dry, you can be sure that your facial skin is drying out, too.
- Eczema and psoriasis also cause flaking skin. While these are medical conditions, they can often be worsened by the environment.
- Acne does not confine itself to oily skin, dry skin can also be afflicted with acne, and flaking can easily occur with dry skin acne.
As you can see, flaking skin can occur at any season of the year, and it can make existing skin conditions even worse, as well as detracting from the appearance of you complexion.
Get Flaking Skin under Control
Fortunately, there are a number of ways to combat flaking skin and help your complexion look fresh and healthy regardless of skin type and season. You will not have to make any serious adjustments to your lifestyle, either, just a few tweaks here and there.
- Protect yourself from the sun. This will apply not only to the summer months, but to the winter ones as well. During the winter, while the sun may be lower on the horizon, it is still throwing UV rays at you, and any snow cover will magnify the effect through reflection. Wear a wide-brimmed hat during the warmer months, and at all times, be sure to apply a quality sunscreen in all seasons.
- The air in your home, particularly during the winter when you have the furnace going, will dry your skin right out. Try using a humidifier to add needed moisture to the air, you will feel the tightness of your skin relax and it will help reduce flaking.
- Your choice of facial wash will have a great impact on whether you will experience flaky skin. Harsh soaps, or washes that contain heavy fragrances, or too many chemicals can irritate and dry your skin. Skin suffering from acne is especially delicate and to prevent flaking and irritation choose the best face wash for acne prone skin.
- It will always be a temptation during the winter, to get into a nice, hot shower or bath to chase away any chills. Unfortunately, hot water is not good for your skin, especially your facial skin. Hot water will remove too much oil from your skin, even if you have oily skin, making it more susceptible to drying and flaking. Use tepid or lukewarm water instead. If you really feel the need of a hot bath or shower, don’t wash your face there, wait until afterwards and use cooler water.
- An exfoliant can be used after you have washed your face. You will want to remove old makeup and any dirt before you use a moisturizer. In most cases, you will not want to use an exfoliant every day, but rather every two or three days.
- Once you have finished with washing and using an exfoliant, use your towel to pat your face dry. If you have acne, you will not want to drag a towel across the infected areas to further irritate them. Before your face has dried completely, gently massage a moisturizer appropriate to your skin type into it. This will help to lock in moisture to keep your skin looking dewier and prevent drying and flaking.
Proper facial care may take a bit of time and effort to achieve, but not only will you be reaping some excellent results in the form of healthier, better looking skin, but it will also give you a chance to pamper yourself a little bit.
